Sunderland Councils Education Dept is to become the first authority in the country to implement the governments strategic plan to control unruly classes, and monitor teacher quality by ordering teaching staff in it`s borough to wear C.C.T.V`s during classes. It follows demands by parents who wish to observe behaviour and teaching excellence in schools.
The cameras will be switched on at all times in an effort to improve teaching, give evidence against unruly children, and protect teachers and pupils alike against false claims of impropriety. In keeping with the current legislation protecting children`s identities`, the cameras will have no sound and technology within the cameras will hide the faces of non-white ethnic minority children in order to avoid accusations of racism. In addition the faces of white children will be hidden in an effort to show equality. The cameras on the lapels of teaching staff will be positioned so that the identity of teachers will not be shown thus protecting them from retaliation and bullying from pupils, parents, and less able colleagues.
The trials are expected to run for two years, or until the cameras break or get stolen.
