Whilst doing research for this product, I was fascinated to read that the earliest known sunglasses were worn by Persian Royalty. Paintings and documents show members of the royal Persian family wearing sunglasses with lenses made of tortoise shell. The wearer was accompanied by a slave known as the `Shay-ad`, or `the royal eyes`. As the tortoise shell lenses prevented the wearer from seeing anything it was the responsibility of the `Shay-ads` to lead the way and to describe what the royal eyes were missing. The sun glasses became particularly popular with Charioteers until they were banned after a series of accidents . The practise declined in popularity in about 1500BC. Incidentally the word `Shay-ad` continues to this day in the modern word `shades` despite most people believing they shade from the sun.
